We took a jaunt up to Bozeman today to pick up my brother at the airport. It was stormy on the way back down 191 but there was crazy wildlife. The spring season is indeed the ripest, the rivers full, animals are out in droves, everything fresh, raw, biting. We stopped a couple times to take pics. This moose walking along the Gallatin river is majestic, but watch to the end of the clip to see a trio of Big Horn Rams stand stoic then make a hillside dash through the trees. Strong gothic beasts! The footage of the rams was taken almost at night with the aperture and shutter way open, thus the grain/ blur. Still pretty cool.

This classic sharecropper’s shovelhead auction caps off a bountiful week of treasure hunting on the land . We like to think of it as a regular work week, and we’ve already begun to see the profits with fresh ebay bids for the antique pepsi bottle, the turn of the century water bucket, and the Model T door handle. Don’t be caught in the cold without a treasure of your own. Click HERE and bid!
Goatsilk’s Daily Treasures - Living Off The Land! Episode #4: Modernist Pillow
This pillow found by the side of highway 87 near the Raynold’s pass bridge has been touched by the artful hand of nature. It struck us immediately as having similar qualities to a Vija Celmin galaxy drawing, or maybe a combination of Yayoi Kusama and Agnes Martin. This pillow is alive, literally. It could be framed and hung, or more practically it could be preserved and used as a driving cushion or a stylish camping grade baby changing mat. View the ebay auction and bid on this exciting find HERE.
Goatsilk’s Daily Treasures - Living Off The Land! Episode #3: Turn of The Century Water Pail
Today’s auction features a perfectly weathered turn of the century water pail. Sometimes you find something that has aged in a truly magical way, and this pail is one of those things. Found nestled at the root of a sage bush, it’s likely not been touched by anyone until we found it with our keen appreciation for historical relics. As to what this pail was used for, and who used it, it’s a wonderful thing to imagine. We certainly did! Enjoy, and please visit and bid on the auction which can be found HERE.
Goatsilk’s Daily Treasures - Living Off The Land! Episode #2: Discovery of a Model T Door Handle
While out scouring this afternoon, we came across a particularly delicious item, a perfectly in tact Ford Model T door handle. We anticipate that with a little love, care, and research, this item should bring in some big bucks on ebay. Have a look at our docu-discovery video below, complete with historical footage of a young ambitious motorist who went astray. To see the auction and place your bid, click HERE.
Goatsilk’s Daily Treasures - Living Off The Land! Episode #1: Excavated Antique Pepsi Bottle
For the next 2 months, keep an eye out for “Daily Treasures” posts. These are part of a project that we’re kicking off today where we put up for auction (on ebay) various found objects we discover on the land surrounding the cabin we’re currently staying in. We want to see if we can reinvigorate these forgotten items with some meaning, enough perhaps to make someone bid on, buy, and care for them again. Also we find this endeavor ripe for the type of humor we like. Have a look at our first episode, then click HERE to view the ebay auction for this antique excavated pepsi bottle. Happy bidding!
Kimbo Slice’s Rise To The Top
Last year about this time I made this blog post about the national on-line fascination with Kimbo Slice. At that time he was just beginning to be known a bit for his videotaped bare-fisted back alley fights, and the fact that fellow internet sensation Bas Rutten was supposedly beginning to train him in actual martial arts techniques. One year later he’s fighting on national television on CBS. That’s amazing, frankly. I can’t even tell you who the heavyweight boxing champion is these days (not since Mike Tyson reigned could I tell you this.) What does this mean? Well, first off, it definitely doesn’t mean that we’ve lost interest in the rawness of hand to hand, man to man combat. All that is there and always will be. It does mean that the culture of the “fight” has changed with the need for extremes. Boxing has become too tame for the mainstream. UFC used to be so violent that it was subcultural, but no longer, not with the celebration of Kimbo Slice on CBS. Kimbo’s fight against the British brute James Thompson was quite the spectacle, and it ended up being a serious slugfest like the people wanted. However, many people felt it was fixed and that there was no way the network could have allowed for Kimbo to lose. Might be true.
Here is how they announced Kimbo: “He hails from Miami, Florida by way of the Bahamas. Ladies and Gentlemen, please welcome the heavy handed phenom, the popular legend and street fighting star of the internet. Here he is, ladies and gentlemen, introducing the one….the only….Kimboooooo Slice!”
It’s another amazing story of rising up from nothing using only one’s fists. In this case, rising up through the viral power of the internet. And this scene has become just plain otherworldly, with fighters seeming like they materialized straight out of a video game instead of vice versa. Kimbo sports the trademark thick beard and bald head, newly adorned with some sort of sumo braid on the back, and I sometimes think he sports his beard so thick to pad those bare fisted blows a bit. These two men are behemoths, modern day beasts, grizzlies, pure elements. We can’t get enough. Here is the final round of the fight from last week. If you want to see the rest, and judge for yourself if it’s fixed, you can find it all on youtube (where else?) with ease.
Stereo Total - Baby Revolution
I came across this song by Stereo Total while listening to Pandora the other day. It struck me immediately so I went to youtube and looked for videos and found this little 3rd party video which I think is pretty great. I like how the author wrote out the words as he draws, rolls, and lights his cigarette. Playfulness with a powerful message. The song just sounds sweet and is written, played and sung so well. Enjoy.
